10. ANGEL DI MARIA
A player who has grown under the shadow of the great Lionel Messi could easily have carved his own chapter in Argentine football history. He scored the winner in the COPA America Finals in 2021 against Brazil which is Argentina’s only major international trophy in recent years. He currently plays for struggling Juventus in Seria A. In his three appearances, in this year’s football World Cup he has assisted one goal so far. He has played in a lot of top clubs across Europe including Real Madrid, PSG and Manchester United.

Leading their line will be FC Barcelona forward Memphis Depay. He had a spectacular run in the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers that got them to the World Cup. In 12 games he scored 12 goals and assisted 6 more. However, in La Liga, he has not seen many starts with the arrival of Lewandowski and also an injury.

8. SON HEUNG MIN- SOUTH KOREA
Heung Son Min or Son as he is fondly called has single-handedly put South Korea in the world football map. He plays for Tottenham Hotspurs in the English Premier League. However, he is going through a bit of a lean patch in the domestic league, scoring just three and assisting 2 goals in 13 matches. He also had a dismal world cup run and in the first two matches has not been able to post a single goal contribution for his team. However, come the final group of the 2022 World Cup match against Portugal, one can never count someone of his calibre out.

He narrowly missed out on a Euro Triumph in 2021 when England lost the finals to Italy on penalties. In this world Cup he will be flanked by some world class players to support him up the pitch like Phil Foden who is playing his first World Cup and Rashford who has had a good start to the tournament. He was the joint top scorer in the last edition of World Cup racking up a total of 6 goals. This time however, he has been contributing by assisting his teammates and has a total of 3 assists in the last three games something he has added to his game in the last few seasons.

He has started for Brazil in both their encounters and has one assist to his name. He will be looking forward to score against Cameroon to go into the knock-out stages with confidence. In La Liga, this season he has 6 goals in 3 matches. His strength lies in his electric speed and ability to beat players. Since the last season he has also been very clinical in the final third.

Robert Lewandowski has to shoulder a lot of his country’s hopes in this World Cup because he is by far their most prolific player. He currently plays for FC Barcelona after years of dominance in the Bayern Munich shirt and has been in good form recently. After his initial struggles in Barcelona, he has notched up 13 goals and 4 assists this season in La Liga. In the FIFA World Cup 2022 he has scored 1 goal and 1 assist in the three matches he has played so far. He was also their main man leading them through their qualifiers where he scored 9 goals and 4 assists in 9 matches for his country. He will also try to compensate for the rather bleak outing in the Euros of 2021 for which he came under much criticism. He has started the campaign strongly, bagging 3 goals and an assist in the first 3 games of the group stages, France will hope that he is able to repeat his feats and lead the attack into the business end of the tournament.

3. NEYMAR- BRAZIL
Neymar will be the main man of Brazil which is filled with superstars from back to front and is one of the hot favourites to lift the trophy. At the club lever, he currently plays for French Champions Paris Saint Germain. He agonisingly fell short of his first COPA America last year and will look forward to make amends. Brazil have qualified for the round of 16 with one game in hand. However, Neymar could only play the opener against Serbia as he missed the second match due to injury against Switzerland. Brazil fans would want to see their star man back up and running for the knockout rounds. Neymar absolutely owned the qualifiers to the FIFA world Cup scoring 8 and assisting 8 in the 11 matches he played.

2.LIONEL MESSI-ARGENTINA
Lionel Messi, just like Ronaldo is playing his fifth and last World Cup. He currently plays for Paris Saint Germain in the French Ligue 1 and is carrying impressive form into the tournament. He finally won a major international trophy, the COPA America against Brazil last year and it was a very emotional affair. However, he would be keen to finish his career with a World Cup something many believe will confer him as the undisputed Greatest of All Time. He was agonisingly close to winning it all in the 2014 World Cup before Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner sealed the deal for Germany. He is the third all time highest active goal scorer in world football with a total of 93 goals and he has already scored 2 goals in the group stage of this year’s World Cup along with one assist.

1. CRISTIANO RONALDO- PORTUGAL
Any discussion on world class forwards in the present generation would be incomplete without Portugal’s captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, the all time top scorer in Club and International football. His second stint at Manchester United did not go as planned and ended on a bitter note with strong suggestions of rift between him and the manager. So he came into the tournament at the back of a raging controversy. But then again, Ronaldo is known to emerge from the ashes and prove his critics wrong. He started of the campaign with a penalty goal against Ghana in the opener and Portugal have won both their opening matches. This is Ronaldo’s fifth and, in all probability, his final World Cup. Having won it all, be it league titles, Champions League, Euro Cup, Ballon D’ Ors, this is the one trophy missing from his cabinet.
